Exploring the turquoise river - Ines Mondon and Mark James Ford on tour

As part of our search for and desire to photograph rivers of a special nature, Ines and I visited the Soca river in Slovenia in June.
The Soca is an exceptional river in Northwest Slovenia which its characterised by an intense blue color and its preservation in its raw natural surroundings.

Wild and powerful it forces itself through narrow clefts in the mountains, eventually running gently through the wide valleys, it manages to retain a degree of wildness not often found in Europe. Glittering in the midday sun the crystal clear water, sometimes turquoise blue, sometimes emerald green, flows as it has since time immemorial through the beautiful green landscape on its way to the Adriatic.

Further to this, the riverbed is often filled with massive rock formations, for the most part white in color and often covered with dark lichen and moss, the interaction of this with the water is an endless source of interesting motifs.

The river is famous amongst canoeists and rafters who are searching for a challenging adventure. Seeing them fighting their way through the wild and narrow water course instills nothing less than respect and admiration. Our objective was to capture the essence of this river in photographic form and with this we had a lot of fun. In order to get some of the best motifs, we sometimes had to climb down deep into the river gorge. Especially after rain, this was not without danger as the rocks could be very slippery and whilst the two of us were able to do this with photo baggage and everything, neither of us would have wanted to attempt to do this alone: Being able to pass each other the photo baggage or give each other a hand- or foot-up was the only way we could do this. For our efforts we were rewarded with unbelievable colors and structures in both water and rock. The gorge walls were at times filled with almost tropical vegetation held moist by the spray of the powerful river as it forced its way past rock and stone - a journey characterised by innumerable waterfalls.

In the undisturbed side valleys, rivers find their way down to the Soca over smaller though no less impressive waterfalls.
The extensive vegetation was accompanied by a multitude of butterflies and birds: a paradise for any nature photographer.

Examples of this included the Slap Kozjak waterfall and the protected Tolminska korita. The outside bar by the entrance to the Tolminska korita, reassuringly frequented by local farmers, with its wine at 80 cents per glass (and good to!) was a welcome finish to a hard days photography ;-)

For anybody who is interested in color, form and structure; for water in its many facets; for nature, at its most powerful and beautiful and which  appears to be untouched by man will not be disappointed.

On top of all this, Slovenia is a beautiful country, with friendly people and surprisingly good wine, which we intend to visit again.
